Procedure / Time Frame

Under Singapore’s current practice, the estimated time frame from the filing of an application to the issuance of Registration Certificate for a smooth trademark application is approximately 9 to 12 months.

Validity / Renewal

A trade mark is valid for 10 years from its date of registration. It may be renewed indefinitely every 10 years. A request for trademark renewal should be filed within six months prior to the expiration of the registration or within a 12 months grace period after the expiration date provided that a surcharge is paid.

Direct National Application:-

  1. Filing form request for the grant of a patent;
  2. Applicant's name and address;
  3. Inventor's name and address;
  4. A specification comprising a description, claims and any necessary drawings;
  5. the country and filing particulars of basic application whose priority is claimed;
  6. Form for the appointment of patent agent; and
  7. A statement justifying how the applicant derives its right to the patent from the inventor, normally by virtue of assignment or employment.

PCT National Phase Application:-

  1. A copy of the PCT application in English language (i.e. PCT/RO/101);
  2. The details of the PCT application as published by WIPO;
  3. PCT specification as originally filed;
  4. International Preliminary Report on Patentability;
  5. Amendments filed in the international phase (if any);
  6. Power of Attorney; and
  7. A statement justifying how the applicant derives its right to the patent from the inventor, normally by virtue of assignment or employment.
Procedure / Time Frame
  1. Application

    Applicant is required to submit an application within 12 months of priority date.

  2. Publication

    The application will be published after 18 months from the date of filing of the application.

  3. Examination
    An applicant of the Singaporean patent application has several options of patent registration (timeframe for filing corresponding requests is indicated in brackets and counted from the date of filing, or if priority is claimed from the date of priority):
    • to file a request for a search (13 months, extendable by 18 months) and examination (36 months, extendable by 18 months);
    • to file a combined request for search and examination (36 months, extendable by 18 months);
    • to file a request for examination (36 months, extendable for 18 months) based on foreign search report.
  4. Registration

    Upon receiving Notice of Eligibility to Proceed to Grant from the Patent Registrar, the applicants can submit a Request for Grant within 2 months. On grant, a certificate of grant would be issued, and this fact and date of grant will be published in the Patents Journal.

Validity / Renewal

The validity term of a patent in Singapore is 20 years from the filing date. The annual fees should be paid starting from the 5th year counting from the filing date and become payable within the 3 months before the deadline. Late payment is possible within the 6-month grace period upon payment of a corresponding surcharge.

Procedure / Time Frame
  1. Application

    Design application has to be filed with the Intellectual Property of Singapore.

  2. Formality Examination

    The Registrar on receipt of application will accord a filing date and will proceed to examine the application on the "formality requirements"

  3. Registration

    Once an application is in order, a registration certificate will be issued and the application will be published in the Designs Journal. Once published, the published designs are made available for public inspection.

Validity / Renewal

The validity term of an industrial design in Singapore is 5 years from the filing date. This term may be renewed 4 times up to a maximum of 25 years. An application for renewal must be filed during the last 6 months of a five-year registration period. Late payment is possible within a 6-month grace period upon payment of a corresponding surcharge.
